This April, The Northern Edge is teaming up with Rouges and Vagabonds Entertainment (RAVE) to bring you Neil Simon’s “Last of the Red Hot Lovers”.

This Neil Simon classic tells the story of  middle-aged Barney Cashman who married his high school sweetheart.  He wants to have one sweeping extra-marital romantic fling in his tranquil, faithful, marriage before life passes him by. On three different afternoons, he brings women to his mother’s apartment while she’s at the hospital doing work. Behind plentiful laughs is a tender portrayal of a decent fellow who just can’t succeed in sinning.

Start the evening with a great meal of broiled haddock fillets, bacon-wrapped tenderloin, or chicken cordon bleu, sit back to enjoy the show, and relax afterwards with a cocktail, or glass of win–and try to explain to your “better half” how you would never attempt such a folly!

Waiting their turn at the Smelt Fry

The first day of the 2011 Rotary Smelt Fry has come and gone.  The dining room of the Northern Edge was filled–as were the bellies of those who came to eat.

The Smelt Fry is one of the Lodi Area Rotary’s biggest and most-anticipated events.   This year certainly lived up to the anticipation.  The golden-brown smelt were delicious, the conversation was lively, and volunteers were kept busy.

The event is run entirely by volunteers from the Rotary and their families.  The dining room and kitchen are generously donated by Annette and Rick Fassbender, owners of the Northern Edge, and the skilled and eager crew of Rotary volunteers takes care of all the rest–from running the kitchen to serving cold milk and hot coffee.

Proceeds from the Smelt Fry go directly to the Lodi Area Rotary, and are used both locally and internationally to provide education, service, and community strength.

If you’ve never been to a Smelt Fry, you don’t know what you’re missing.  But don’t worry, it’s not done yet.  There’s still one more day:  March 30th, from 5pm to 9pm.  After that, you’ll have to wait until next year.

If you’re not from the area, you may not know about this great tradition.  Every March, on the middle and last Wednesday of the month, the Lodi Rotary Club hosts their smelt-fry fundraiser.  Once again the event is being hosted by the Northern Edge.

The meal includes:

• Smelt
• German Potato Salad
• French Fries
• Baked Beans
• Cole Slaw
• Your choice of home-made Rye or White Bread (with butter)
• And Coffee or Milk

Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 at the door.  They can be purchased at the Northern Edge or Main Street Liquor.

The proceeds help the Lodi Rotary Club to continue providing the quality community programs they’re famous for.
